Backyard Ramblings
I am going to continuously update this WORD with new photos, observations, and thoughts about the woods in my area. I plan on being in this neighborhood for the next three years (at least) and want to get to know the forest as well as possible. I want to find every big tree, learn what animals live here, know where the streams are, seek out where the flowers bloom in spring, and discover what new animals move in during summer, etc. I wrote a long essay about the importance of knowing your bio-region; this is my attempt to show you what I learn and experience outside of my home. I hope through this experiment, I can show people that the outdoors is not always “somewhere else” it can literally be right out your door. So keep checking back here for updates and new pictures of my backyard. At the bottom, you will find a list of every species I have seen and documented (hopefully with photos).

Well, it took a bit longer to update this than planned. I have been hiking a lot, I just have not had the urge to write about it recently. Today however, I went on a pleasant hike, with my pad and pen, ready and eager to jot down some thoughts. I hiked up hill for about 25 min off trail and came to a gorgeous old Maple. I dug out a hole, laid down some sticks, and sat down. The atmosphere was brilliant, the snow was deep, the light was nice, the temperature moderate. I leaned back, opened the pad and began to write. And then learned either my pen has frozen up, or it was dead. No matter, I couldn’t write at all and all my thoughts drifted away anyways. I sat for a while, hoping to see some animals, but had no luck as usual. I put my snow shoes back on, walked further up the hill to the crest of our mountain and wandered around a little. The light was nice and made some interesting compositions with shadows. I also came across not only some snowshoe hare prints, but coyote prints following them. (I can only assume the coyote was following the hare, and not vice versa). I too followed the prints hoping to come across something, but to no avail. I called it a day. Danny decided to pose for me. I also have included a little map of my area.
